LingQ has evolved from a system to teach English launched in 2002 called TheLinguist.com. This system was rebuilt in 2007 and relaunched as LingQ, teaching multiple languages in August 2007. Since August 2007, LingQ has been refining its feature set and improving its social interactivity.

LingQ does not use a traditional grammar based approach to language learning, nor does it rely on pictures and games. LingQ’s approach is based on a lot of reading and listening in the target language to content that is of interest to the learner. LingQ’s system enables any authentic content to be used as learning material.

Currently, four different monthly membership levels are available including Free membership. Basic, Plus and Premium memberships include increasing amounts of tutoring services like writing correction and live conversation.
